I had the idea for this set as a present for some very dear friends. They have inspired me in lots of ways over the fairly short time I have known them and I wanted to make something for them as a surprise gift. They have such bright and vibrant personalities that I thought a rainbow design, full of colour and vitality would reflect them well.

This pattern is simple and would be suitable for a crochet beginner, it is worked in rounds. I use abbreviations according to UK crochet language. The finished Cup Coaster is approximately 8cm (3") in diameter and the finished Central Coaster is approximately 18cm (7"). These are highly practical items as cotton yarn is hard-wearing and machine washable.

Tools needed:
3.5mm (US size E) crochet hook
4.00mm (US size G) crochet hook
scissors
yarn needle

Yarn needed:

DK cotton yarn in Red (approx 4g), Orange (4g), Yellow (4g), Green (5g), Blue (6g), Purple (7g) and a neutral colour (38g).

I used Catania (colours: 0115, 0189, 0208, 0205, 0201, 0113) and as the neutral colour Chiltern Craft Cotton unbleached (1C06).

Abbreviations:

NC = neutral coloured yarn
